KAKATA—Team Kakata, a non-for-profit organization comprising citizens and former residents of Kakata City residing in the United States, on Saturday, February 3, 2024, donated 155 bags of 25kg rice to several underprivileged and vulnerable groups in Kakata, Margibi County.
The rice was distributed among the aged, visually impaired, widows, and disabled people of 14th Road Community, Buzzi Quarter Community, Bassa Community, and orphanages including the Peter W. Sayklon and Christian Children Ministries.
Presenting the donation, Team Kakata special committee head, Gaye D. Sleh, Jr. on behalf of the group membership and head Mrs. Yassah Kortu Dennis, said this year’s rice distribution is part of the organization’s annual initiative embarked upon more than three years ago.
According to Mr. Sleh, Team Kakata’s annual charity outreach is focused on extending humanitarian gestures to vulnerable residents of Kakata City, especially during the festive Christmas and New Year seasons.
“The idea by citizens of Kakata residing in the United States of America to establish an organization to help our people back home started among a small group of “Kakatonians” who used to sympathize with each other, and out of that idea of forming a larger group we started to look back and help our people,” Mr. Sleh narrated.
Mr. Sleh: “We feel the need to give back because we were fortunate to go to the United States of America. So, we can not forget about where we came from. Kakata is just a special place to some of us and we feel attached to Kakata and that is why we take pleasure in championing this cause.”
For his part, outgoing Kakata City Mayor Emmanuel Goll, speaking at the distribution site, lauded the members and leadership of Team Kakata for the food donation, adding that he was delighted that sons and daughters of Kakata residing in the U.S. would think of their people back home and extend them assistance.
He, however, admonished the beneficiaries to appreciate the donation while anticipating more.
Responding, the founder of the Peter W. Sayklon Orphanage on the outskirts of Kakata City, Rev. Peter W. Sayklon, expressed gratitude to the entire membership and leadership of Team Kakata for selecting his institution to benefit, terming their gesture as ‘welcoming and timely’.
Rev. Sayklon, however, promised that the donation would be used for its intended purpose.
All the beneficiaries, in separate remarks, extended their thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Yassah Kortu Dennis and her team and prayed for God’s continued blessings upon them.
