DUAZON, Margi County – Indigenous residents of Duazon Town, situated on the Roberts field highway, took to the streets in protest against what they deem an unlawful seizure of land by a private company. They demand compensation for land utilized by the company for the construction of commercial housing units.
The dispute traces back to negotiations initiated by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in 2006, with an initial agreement to erect low-cost housing units for officers of the Armed Forces of Liberia.
However, the residents alleged that the land was instead allocated to a private entity, Millennium Construction Company, which is now reportedly constructing and selling housing units at exorbitant prices, contrary to the agreed-upon terms.
Despite attempts to reach out to Millennium Construction Company’s General Manager for comment, the company has yet to respond as promised.
The residents also claimed that as part of the negotiation with former President Sirleaf, the Liberian government was supposed to provide various amenities, including clinics, schools, road construction, and a town hall, as compensation for the land.
Amos P. Richard, General Town Chief of Duazon community, expressed disappointment, stating, “All the promises made have not been fulfilled by the government. Instead, we see a private company building high-cost housing units. That wasn’t the agreement.”
However, investigations by FrontPage Africa reveal that Millennium Construction Company is facing challenges, as several clients who have purchased homes are yet to receive keys to their properties.
Madam Caroline Davis, based in the U.S., has accused the company of fraud for failing to hand over a housing unit she paid for. In response, the company acknowledged delays in property turnover but refuted the fraud allegations.
