A lengthy manhunt in Oregon ended Tuesday night after authorities arrested a suspect who they warned was “extremely dangerous,” authorities said. He later he died in the hospital.
Benjamin Foster, 36, a convicted felon who was wanted for the recent kidnapping, torture and attempted murder of a woman, is now dead after an hour-long standoff with police.
Foster was initially found Tuesday afternoon in a crawl space under a home and refused to turn himself in to officers with the Grants Pass Police Department and other departments for several hours. SWAT and a Crisis Negotiation team were on the scene.
He was taken into custody Tuesday night after a self-inflicted gunshot wound, KTVL-TV reported.

Authorities said no officers were injured in the arrest.
In 2019, before moving to Oregon, Foster held his then-girlfriend captive inside his Las Vegas apartment for two weeks. A Las Vegas police report obtained by The Associated Press says she was suffocated to the point of unconsciousness and she suffered broken ribs, two black eyes and injuries from tying her wrists and ankles.
He was initially charged with five felony counts, including assault and battery, and faced decades in prison upon conviction.

In lieu of the lengthy sentence, Clark County prosecutors reached an agreement with Foster in which he would plead guilty to one felony charge and one misdemeanor charge of assault. In September 2021, a judge sentenced him to up to 2 1/2 years in a Nevada prison.
But after the 729 days he had spent in jail awaiting trial were included in his punishment, Foster had to serve fewer than 200 additional days in state custody.

Last week, on January 24, Foster was again charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and assault after a victim was found in Grants Pass, Oregon. The victim, a woman, was hospitalized in critical condition.
Before the arrest, police released a photo of Foster, but said his appearance may have changed since it was taken. Grants Pass Police Lt. Jeff Hattersley said Foster had cut his brown hair to shoulder length and grown a thicker beard.

Additional photos of Foster will be posted, as they become available, for help in their identification,” Grant said. Pass Police said in a January 29 update.
Grants Pass police issued a community advisory saying Foster was still on the run Tuesday afternoon.

The Grants Pass Police Department said suspect Benjamin Foster was seen near the home from the January 24 crime scene just days later.
