Michigan State University gunman Anthony McRae had two handguns and several loaded magazines when police located him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday night, Fox 2 Detroit reports.
McRae, 43, opened fire inside an academic hall on the MSU campus around 8:18 p.m., then walked toward the student union and fired more shots, killing three students and wounding five others.
Police released surveillance footage of McRae during the multi-hour chase, and a community tip led authorities to his location about four miles from campus.

Officers saw McRae and called out to him, at which point he shot and killed himself, Fox 2 Detroit reported Wednesday, citing law enforcement sources. He was carrying a pistol and had a second pistol and a multi-load magazine in a backpack.
Surveillance video showed McRae walking down an empty street and into an alley about an hour after the shooting.

A note found in his pocket indicated threats to two public schools in Ewing Township, New Jersey. Police said McRae had “local ties to Ewing Township” and “had a history of mental health issues.”

Authorities have remained publicly quiet about the weapons used in the attack and how McRae obtained them.
He was previously charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a license in the summer of 2019, an offense punishable by up to five years in prison that would have prohibited him from owning a weapon.
In October 2019, prosecutors dropped that felony charge after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle. He was sentenced to 18 months of probation, which ended in May 2021.

A neighbor told Fox 2 Detroit that police had also previously called McRae because he fired guns in his backyard.

His brother, Michael McRae, told Fox News Digital that Anthony’s life began to unravel after his mother died in September 2020.
“I lived in a sheltered world,” Michael said, noting that Anthony stopped taking care of himself and refused to look for work. “It started to change. He was getting more and more bitter and angry. I ask him: ‘What’s on your mind?’ But he didn’t want to talk to me.”

McRae had no affiliation with the university and police are still looking for a motive for the shooting.

The three students killed in the attack were identified Tuesday as Alexandria Verner, a Clawson junior; Arielle Anderson, a Grosse Pointe sophomore; and Brian Fraser, a sophomore also from Grosse Point.
Five victims were seriously injured in the shooting and are being treated at Sparrow Hospital.
