  • The body of a woman was found in a pit bath on the property she shared with her husband.
  • Polokwane police have since arrested the woman’s husband.
  • The suspect called police on Saturday to say he couldn’t find his wife.

Polokwane police arrested a 38-year-old man on Saturday for the murder of his wife.

Lendelani Nengovela’s body was found in a flushed toilet in her backyard in Mangodi Ha Sidou.

Police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the couple reportedly had a “bitter relationship”.

“The victim had opened a domestic violence case against him and he was arrested. He was out on bail and was due to appear again at Thohoyandou Magistrate Court next week. [however] the 33-year-old woman went to court on Friday, January 27 and dismissed the case,” said Mojapelo.

Police said the suspect called them Saturday morning and reported that he was unable to locate his wife, but was “shocked” to find her dead in the toilet in their backyard.

A preliminary investigation by police at the scene led to the arrest of the suspect.

“The suspect is expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court on Monday,” Mojapelo added.

The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the murder.

“This is another incident of gender-based violence and femicide perpetrated against a vulnerable member of society. The woman confided in her husband that he would not physically harass her again, but now he is gone. We urge community members who have problems domestic workers to seek help and desist from resorting to violence,” Hadebe said.
