A World War Two bomb exploded in the English city of Great Yarmouth on Friday as workers tried to defuse it, according to police.
The device was discovered Tuesday at a river crossing in Great Yarmouth. It was tracked down by a contractor working on the third crossing over the Yare River.
And on Friday, Norfolk police revealed that there had been an “unplanned” detonation.

No injuries were reported and police said all army and emergency services personnel were accounted for.
Army specialists had been cutting up the bomb using a technique that creates slow combustion of explosives, police said. Workers began trying to cut off the pump on Thursday.

“This has been a painstakingly long process, but public safety and the safety of the individuals involved in the operation has been at the center of the decision making,” Norfolk Police Deputy Chief Nick Davison said in a statement. release.
“This was the final phase of a delicate operation that has caused a lot of upheaval in the city, but we hope that this can be resolved soon and the cordons can be lifted, if all goes according to plan,” he continued.

A spokesman for Cadent, which runs the local gas distribution network, said the company had carried out a “thorough inspection of our pipelines in the surrounding area,” according to Sky News.
“There is no indication that the explosion has caused damage to our assets and gas continues to flow safely,” the spokesperson said.
