Prasa’s board has attached a Special Investigation Unit to investigate allegations of ghost workers, fraud and ‘sabotage’ of tenders.

The board of the South African Passenger Railway Agency (Prasa) has contracted the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of ghost workers, fraud and “sabotage” of tenders at the institution.
In a meeting on Tuesday, the board said “corruption will not go unaddressed.”
The board said it had received a preliminary report on the matter and that there was “clear prima facie evidence” of wrongdoing.

He added that the SIU would also investigate allegations that insurance companies had been defrauded, with a view to recovering the embezzled funds and conducting lifestyle audits. The SIU is also expected to investigate reports of employee violations of supply chain management processes.
The board said the investigation would not be limited to members of supply chain management committees.
“The board has received unpleasant reports that there are deliberate attempts to sabotage the awarding of critical tenders that will unlock modernization and alleviate unemployment and poverty,” Prasa said in a statement.
The board may include other “irregular issues in the SIU’s mandate,” he added.
“Prasa employees are encouraged to co-operate with SIU seconded members to ensure expediency and completion of these matters. All efforts are to restore Prasa’s mandate to provide better and more affordable services to the people of South Africa” the board said.
