Heavy rains caused massive flooding in San Francisco which saw traffic chaos and road closures as people ushered in 2023 with an “atmospheric river storm.” Partially submerged vehicles were seen after the flooding, Reuters news agency reported authorities issued a flood warning, which was in effect in nearby Alameda County until 3:30 am (1130 GMT) on Sunday (1 from January).

Nearly two feet (0.6 meters) of snow could accumulate through early Sunday in the Sierra Nevada, the Associated Press reported, adding that weather conditions continued to pose challenges as the National Weather Service in Sacramento issued a warning about dangerous driving conditions. .

Due to the flooding, a section of US 101, which is one of the main traffic arteries in the state, remained closed. It is located south of San Francisco. Videos shared widely on social media showed mud-colored water running down the streets of San Francisco as people walked by.

California has been facing a prolonged dry spell as the state had its driest in three years.
