A Virginia woman has been charged in the death of her 20-month-old son who died over the summer after ingesting a lethal amount of fentanyl, authorities said Friday.
The Prince William County Police Department said Tiffany Nicole Stokes called police around 3 a.m. June 23 from an apartment on Soapstone Drive in Gainesville to report that she woke up to find her son unconscious in bed.
The boy was taken to the hospital where he later died.

In August, a medical examiner discovered that the boy had fentanyl in his blood, leading to his death. The boy is believed to have ingested the fentanyl sometime between the night of June 22 and the early morning hours of the next day, police said.
When investigators interviewed 37-year-old Stokes, they allegedly found her with an over-the-counter pill containing oxycodone and acetaminophen. She is believed to have accessed and used non-prescription pills believed to be Percocet at the time of her son’s death.

An arrest warrant was issued for Stokes on Wednesday. Attempts to have him handed over to police have been unsuccessful, police said.
She is wanted for manslaughter, child neglect, and possession of a narcotic I or II.
