An Austrian court has convicted four men of terrorism offenses and involvement in murder for their alleged links to an Islamic State group sympathizer who carried out a deadly shooting in Vienna in 2020.

Two of the men were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Vienna state court on Wednesday night and the others to 20 and 19 years respectively, the Austrian Press Agency reported.

Two other defendants were acquitted of the main charges, but convicted of belonging to IS and spreading the group’s propaganda. They received partially suspended two-year sentences.

Four people were killed in the attack on November 2, 2020, and the gunman was also killed. More than 20 people, including a police officer, were injured. The assailant Kujtim Fejzulai, a dual Austrian-North Macedonian national, had a prior conviction for attempting to join Islamic State in Syria.

The six men who went on trial in mid-October were not charged with direct involvement in the attack, but allegedly aided or influenced Fejzulai as he prepared to shoot. In one case, those alleged activities included the acquisition of the weapons used in the shooting.
