American Indian politician from the Democratic Party, Usha Reddi, has been sworn in as a State Senator for the 22nd District in the US state of Kansas, media reported on Friday.

Reddi, a well-known community leader, replaced veteran Manhattan Sen. Tom Hawk on Thursday, who last month announced his retirement from the Legislature, KSN TV reported.
“I was sworn in this afternoon as a state senator for District 22. It was great having my family join me today,” she tweeted.
“It has been a very exciting night. I am delighted to represent Senate District 22,” Reddi said.
Thanking outgoing Sen. Hawk for his dedicated service, Reddi said he led with “a sincere love for the community and built strong relationships along the way.” “Senator Tom Hawk is an outstanding leader, and I’m sure I’ll communicate with him many times,” she said.
Reddi has served on the Manhattan City Commission since 2013 and served twice as mayor.

Previously, she was an educator in the Manhattan-Ogden Public Schools, where she served as president of her chapter of the National Education Association.
She has bachelor’s degrees in psychology and elementary education and earned her master’s degree in educational leadership from Kansas State University.
Reddi will complete the remainder of Senator Hawk’s term, which expires in 2025. Reddi committee assignments will be announced in the coming days.

Reddi’s family immigrated to the United States from India in 1973, when she was eight years old.
He has lived in Manhattan for over 28 years.
