Ukraine’s military announced Tuesday that more than 1,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in a span of 24 hours, setting a grim new record for Vladimir Putin’s army, according to a report.

Overnight, the country’s armed forces increased its running count of Russian soldiers killed by 1,030, bringing the total to 133,190.

He described the daily rise as the highest in the war so far, according to Reuters.

The figures cannot be independently confirmed, but Ukraine also claims to have destroyed 3,245 Russian tanks, 6,443 armored personnel vehicles, 2,232 artillery systems, and 294 aircraft and helicopters in the war.

Moscow, during its winter campaign, has yet to capture a major population center, despite losing thousands of troops, Reuters reports.

Fighting is centered on the Ukrainian-controlled town of Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region, it added.

In an intelligence update on Tuesday, the UK Defense Ministry said Russian forces “only managed to gain several hundred meters of territory a week” because the Kremlin “now lacks the munitions and maneuver units necessary to a successful offensive.

“Senior commanders are likely to make plans that require inexperienced and understaffed units to achieve unrealistic targets due to political and professional pressure,” he also said.
