Mayor John Tory of Toronto, Canada, has announced his resignation following public revelations of an affair with a former female aide.
Tory, 68, admitted to having a romantic relationship with an unidentified 31-year-old woman after the affair was reported by the Toronto Star.

The relationship began during the COVID-19 pandemic, Tory said, during a time when he was regularly estranged from his wife for more than 40 years.
The mayor told reporters that the extramarital affair “ended by mutual agreement this year.”

“I am deeply sorry and unreservedly apologize to the people of Toronto and to all those hurt by my actions,” Tory said in her statement. “Most of all, I apologize to my wife, Barb, and to my family, whom I have let down more than anyone.”
Tory was elected mayor of Toronto in 2014. He was re-elected in 2018 and won again in 2022.

“I am deeply sorry to have to walk away from a job I love in a city I love even more,” Tory said. “I believe, in my heart, that it is best to fully commit to the work that is required to also repair these very important relationships.”
