Protests began across the United States on Friday night following the release of body camera video related to the traffic stop of Tire Nichols, which sent him to a local hospital where he died days later.

In New York City, someone stomped on the windshield of a police cruiser as the crowd chanted “burn it!”

Memphis police released the body camera video as well as other surveillance footage showing officers brutally beating Nichols.

Memphis police pulled over Nichols on Jan. 7 around 8:30 p.m. for “reckless driving” and “a confrontation occurred” during the stop, according to authorities.

Nichols then attempted to run from the officers, and when police caught up with him, another confrontation ensued. Nichols later complained that he was short of breath.

“The suspect was ultimately apprehended,” MPD said. “Afterward, the suspect complained of having difficulty breathing, at which point he was called for an ambulance.”

“What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now! If we don’t get it? Burn it!” Protesters in New York City’s Union Square can be heard saying Friday night.

“I’m not telling you to come here and freak out, but we’re never going to take fucking violence off the table,” a protester yells at the crowd.

“Black cops aren’t black, they’re blue,” says the individual. “A pig is a pig, whether black, white, brown, Asian or Haitian. A policeman is a policeman and stands up for white supremacy.”

Protesters in Memphis blocked the I-55 bridge that connects Arkansas with Tennessee to the center of the city.

The Jan. 7 encounter with police landed Nichols at St. Francis Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition before dying Jan. 10, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Five former Memphis police officers were fired after the incident and are being charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and other charges.

“I didn’t do anything,” Nichols can be heard saying as police officers dragged him out of the car during a traffic stop on Jan. 7.

“Watch out, I’m going to be a stick to fuck with you,” says an officer.

The officers can be seen punching, kicking and hitting Nichols with the baton multiple times.
