A driver crashed his vehicle into a tree after hitting nine people.

Three young children have died after a driver struck nine pedestrians before crashing in Pretoria on Saturday.

The driver’s BMW sedan crashed into a tree near a roundabout at 6th and Koch Street in Salvokop. He then allegedly abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene.

Tshwane City Department of Emergency Services spokesman Thabo Charles Mabaso said three girls aged around five were pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and found several patients scattered around the area with the sedan under a partially collapsed tree.

“The driver of the sedan could not be located at the scene of the accident,” added Mabaso.
