CAPE TOWN, (CAJ News) – RAISE a glass and toast 364 years of award-winning South African wine.

That is the festive message from the Western Cape Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Wesgro) as the country approaches that milestone.

South Africa is said to be the only country in the world that can pinpoint the exact date of the origin of its wine industry, due to a diary entry dated February 2, 1659.

Wesgro has encouraged the public to join in celebrating the country’s wine birthday month by sharing content on its social media platforms that encourages locals to get out to the regions and inspires potential visitors from around the world to visit and experience world class wine. tourism experiences offered in Cape Town and throughout the province.

As part of the celebration, Wesgro has a number of assets including videos, maps, wine tourism guarantees and a white-label wine tourism logo that media can also share on their platforms.

Hashtags include #HappyBirthdaySAWine, #ToUs #SAWineSince1659 and #DiscoverCTWC.

“We encourage the industry to participate in celebrating the birthday of South African wine,” Wesgro said.

The Western Cape produces 95 percent of the country’s wine.

South Africa is the eighth largest wine producer in the world, with 10.6 million hectoliters (mhl) annually, as of 2021.
