The family of a Milwaukee police officer fatally shot in a shootout with a robbery suspect praised him as they remembered him at his funeral Monday.
“I miss you,” said Peter Jerving’s brother, Drew, during the funeral at Elmbrook Church in Brookfield. “And to all those who are now on duty on Earth in your place, I salute you.”
The 37-year-old officer was fatally shot in an exchange of fire early on February 7. The suspect also died from a gunshot wound, police said.

The officer’s mother asked God to bless Milwaukee police officers and their families and asked them to forgive the man who killed her son.
“I ask that you remove any bitterness that you may have in your hearts towards the young man who killed Peter,” said Patty Jerving. “I also ask you to bless that young man’s family and especially her mother. She also lost a son on February 7th. Please help them see that Peter was not her enemy, and neither was I.”
The family of a Wisconsin police officer who died on duty has eulogized him at his funeral.
Jerving’s father, Doug, told officers to grieve for his son, “but then when you’re done grieving, get up, wash your face, and put on the uniform of your chosen profession.”

Thousands of police vehicles joined Jerving’s funeral procession to his burial place in Wisconsin Memorial Park.
On the day of the shooting, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said the suspect ignored officers’ orders and fled on foot after they arrived at the scene of the robbery around 1:15 a.m. on the south side of the city. Jerving then caught up with the suspect, a scuffle ensued, and both men fired their weapons.
Jerving died at a hospital, Norman said.

Jerving had four years of experience with the Milwaukee Police Department, the chief said.
The suspect, Terrell Thompson, 19, died at the scene.
