An Algerian court has handed down a 12-year prison sentence to the younger brother of the country’s late president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, after convicting him of corruption under his brother’s 20-year rule.

Once seen as one of the most powerful men in Algeria, Said Bouteflika was an unofficial adviser to the president, who died in 2021, some two years after a pro-democracy movement forced him out of office.

The Algiers court also fined Said Bouteflika, 65, more than $500,000 on Wednesday night. In addition to the former leader’s brother, the court convicted the former head of the Algerian employers’ association and three business magnates, among others, for corruption and imposed prison sentences.

Said Bouteflika was accused of being at the center of a system that generated new wealth for politicians and industrialists in the gas-rich North African country.

After his brother, the president, was ousted from office under pressure from the pro-democracy movement Hirak and the military, a series of arrests was launched as part of an anti-corruption campaign. Among those currently detained are three former prime ministers, several former ministers, legislators and businessmen, all suspected of corruption. Others fled the country.
