Ejected ANC member Carl Niehaus has announced his “resignation” from the party following the conclusion of the party’s national elective conference this week, where his nemesis President Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as party chairman.
Niehaus, a staunch supporter of former president Jacob Zuma, accused of corruption, and former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule, accused of corruption, announced on Thursday that his uninterrupted membership in the party for the past 43 years was coming to an end with immediate effect. .
Earlier this month, the former spokesperson for the uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association was expelled from the party after the ANC’s national disciplinary committee (NDC) found him guilty of six counts of misconduct.
The charges relate to comments Niehaus made in July outside Zuma’s residence in Nkandla, north KwaZulu-Natal, where he protested Zuma’s jailing for contempt of the Constitutional Court and made disparaging comments about the judiciary.
In his tweeted statement about his “resignation,” Niehaus stated: “I know there are those who will continue their cheap Stratcom political propaganda, trying to undermine the seriousness and importance of this decision, trying to make the case that I cannot resign from a community organization.” that I have already been ‘kicked out'”.
Niehaus argued that when he appealed against his expulsion, he was still a member of the ANC, until his “resignation”.
He said it would be “illogical” to proceed with his appeal against his expulsion.
Niehaus has been a fervent activist against the Ramaphosa party leadership.

However, he vowed that his expulsion/resignation would not be the last time he would be seen on the South African political scene. He pledged his full support to the cause of the “Radical Economic Transformation” (RET).
He said: “That is what our revolutionary efforts and commitments must now be singularly dedicated to, rather than trying to resurrect the corpse of our beloved old liberation movement, the ANC.”
Niehaus, a former ambassador to the Netherlands, resigned as ANC spokesman in 2009 amid allegations of fraud.
He was sacked last year as an ANC staffer.
