A man charged with human smuggling and police evasion in Texas is behind bars, and the four illegal immigrants in the car with him have been turned over to the US Border Patrol.
A Texas Department of Public Safety police officer attempted to pull over a black Mercury Grand Marquis for a traffic violation on US 83 in Mission, Texas on January 27, according to a news release.
The driver, later identified as José Máximo Viera de Peñitas, evaded the patrol car through several cities, rural roads and dirt roads. During the chase, speeds reached 110 miles per hour. Viera reportedly lost control of the vehicle multiple times due to the speed and wet road conditions.
