Survivor of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre celebrates his 101st birthday and calls for justice: “When will it be done?”

Tulsa race massacre survivor Hughes Van Ellis, also known as “Uncle Redd,” marked a major milestone by turning 101 on Wednesday, January 11.

It’s been more than 90 years since Ellis and his sister Viola Ford Fletcher had their lawsuit in court, and there is still no response from the judge.

”As I celebrate my 101st birthday, I’m still waiting for justice to be served! At 101 years old, when will justice be done? The judge needs to move our case forward,” Ellis said, according to Fox News.

Ellis and Fletcher arrived in Ghana in 2021

Last year, brother survivors of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, 100-year-old Ellis and Fletcher, visited Ghana. The two survived the 1921 racist massacre in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

It was the first time the brothers set foot on African soil, and it was for a tour of Ghana. The visit was part of a “come home” campaign organized by the Our Black Truth social media platform.

Ellis and Fletcher arrived in Ghana with their grandchildren for a week-long trip following a campaign to bring people of African descent living abroad “back home.”

“Year of Return” initiative attracting African-Americans to Ghana

The Ghanaian government launched the “Year of Return” initiative in 2019 to urge African Americans and African Diasporas to return ‘home’ and reconnect with their roots. That year also marked the 400th anniversary of the first ship from Africa to reach the shores of the Americas, Virginia.
