Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a Sydney woman.

Police confirmed the international cricket star, 31, was arrested at a Sussex Street hotel at around 1am on Sunday for the alleged incident in East Sydney last week.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command began a joint investigation following reports that a 29-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted at a home in Rose Bay.

Danushka Gunathilaka has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent following an alleged incident on November 2.Source: AAP

Police allege that the woman had exchanged messages with Gunathilaka for days through an online dating app.

The couple met on Wednesday and the professional cricketer sexually assaulted her, according to police reports.

A crime scene examination was carried out at the address on Saturday.

Gunathilaka was taken to the Sydney Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent.

He was denied bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
