SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler insists that the Bafana Bafana’s bad luck stems from a lack of development structures in South Africa.
- The Bafana have been fighting internationally
- The forwards blamed for the lack of goals
- The veteran striker identifies the reasons for the situation
WHAT HAPPENED: Grobler has defended the regular criticism leveled at forwards for not regularly scoring for the national team.
The SuperSport United striker insists that South Africa has not been doing what is necessary in terms of setting up effective development structures to groom the country’s talent.
Furthermore, it suggests that forwards are in the spotlight as there is no specific measure set for players in other departments.
WHAT THEY SAY: “I’ve been asked many times about the strikers in South Africa, but if we’re completely honest, I think South African football in general hasn’t lived up to it,” Grobler told Kick Off.
“If we are completely honest, the lack of development in South Africa for many years is showing now. Today, how many clubs have really good academies? Go and look at it.”
“There is a lot of pressure on the forwards because it is easy to judge them because there are no goals, but I feel that in all departments we are not up to the task.
“We could be much better than we are with the right development structures… Players from other departments are not judged because there are no particular criteria on which to judge other players.
“With the amount of talent there is in the country, we should be way ahead in terms of our football.”

THE BIGGEST PHOTOGRAPH: In 1996, South Africa was crowned continental after beating Tunisia 2-0 in the final of the African Cup of Nations.
Two years later, they were once again at the final hurdle, but lost 2-0 to Egypt. Bafana Bafana qualified for the World Cup that was held in France the same year.
However, over time, the quality has gone down and the Bafana have struggled to appear regularly on Afcon. They also missed the recently concluded World Cup held in Qatar, last qualifying in 2002.
AND WHAT’S MORE: In June this year, the South African manager, Hugo Broos, criticized the quality of the South African players and the competitive level of the Premier Soccer League.
“But I think now is the time to face the real problem. What is the real problem in South Africa? The real problem in South Africa is that we don’t have those quality players,” he said.

WHATS NEXT: Broos hopes to help the team qualify for the Afcon 2023 final in Ivory Coast.
