Rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, popularly known as AKA, has been shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Durban.

Police confirmed that Forbes, 35, and a friend were shot multiple times while standing on the pavement outside a popular restaurant on Durban’s busy Florida Road on Friday night.

A third man, believed to be a bodyguard, is believed to have been injured in the shooting, which police say was carried out by three men traveling in two vehicles.

Forbes was reportedly hit by six bullets and died at the scene, as did the second man, who has yet to be formally identified, in the ambush that took place around 10:00 p.m.

Forbes reportedly dined at the popular Wish restaurant with a group of friends after spending time at a well-known barbershop in the same complex.

The award-winning rapper was scheduled to perform at a Durban nightclub later on Friday.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Forbes’ parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, said they “acknowledge the passing of our beloved son and confirm his untimely and tragic death.”

“To us, Kieran Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, and most importantly a father to his beloved daughter Kairo. For many he was AKA, Supermega, Bhova and the many other affectionate names that his legion of fans called him b. Our son was loved and he gave love in return.

They said they were awaiting further details from Durban police and asked to be given space to deal with their loss.

“In this moment of mourning, we appeal to your compassion, space and time to gather as a family to decide the next few days. We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers and lifted up in the Lord,” the statement concluded.

Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that two men had been shot dead and a third wounded.

No arrests have been made and police are not aware of the motive at this time.

“What we can confirm for now is that a well-known musician, 35, and his bodyguard, said to be 34, were shot and killed on Florida Road on Friday night,” he said.
