Pule Mabe, ANC spokesperson

  • The ANC plans to charge the media for infrastructure space at its national conference in December.
  • Party spokesman Pule Mabe said the media had too many demands and the charge was to optimize available resources.
  • The SA National Editors Forum said it would ask the ANC why it was necessary to put a cost on the newsworthy meeting.

South Africa’s National Editors Forum plans to meet with the ANC as media outrage erupted after the party revealed it planned to charge media for coverage space at its national conference in December.

ANC spokesman Pule Mabe said the ANC was formulating price packages to charge media outlets for infrastructure space at the December leadership conference.

These packages, which would vary according to requirements, would be finalized by the end of the week.

This is the first time the party has charged the media for coverage of the conference.

The cash-strapped ANC has been struggling to pay its staff salaries and contributions to the provident pension fund.

But Mabe said the funds raised from the media were not intended as a lucrative exercise.

He said that the costs associated with providing the infrastructure required by the media were significant for the organization.

He said that more than 300 journalists had registered for the policy conference to cover the event.

“We want to make sure that the five days that we’re here together works for you and can cover everything. Everyone wants to be accommodated. We’re creating this so that everyone can be accommodated.”

“We will do everything we can to make sure we meet your requirements, as we have always done in the past. If the exercise is successful, it will allow me to create a larger media space, and if we don’t meet halfway, it will be difficult.” Mabe said.

Asked whether charging the media for coverage of the conference would be business as usual, Mabe said that the ANC’s soon-to-be-elected general treasurer would decide that.

Sanef said that it would meet with the ANC to understand why the party saw it necessary to put a cost on the journalistic appointment.

Meanwhile, the EFF wrote a lengthy statement warning the SABC not to use “taxpayers’ money” to buy media coverage at the ANC conference.

The ANC conference will take place at the Nasrec Expo in Johannesburg from December 16-20.

More than 6,000 people will attend the conference with more than 4,000 voting delegates.
