A South African soldier was killed and another wounded when they came under fire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday.

The soldiers were flying an Oryx helicopter when it was attacked in Goma.

SA National Defense Force (SANDF) spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini said: “One crew member was fatally shot. Another sustained injuries but continued to fly the helicopter and landed safely at Goma airport. SANDF is in the process of informing the family members of the soldiers involved in this unfortunate incident.”

Defense Minister Thandi Modise, her deputy Thabang Makwetla, Acting Defense Secretary Thobekile Gamede and SANDF chief General Rudzani Maphwanya expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the wounded soldier a speedy recovery.
