Johannesburg (AFP) – Royal AM beat AmaZulu 2-0 in a Durban derby on Sunday and moved up seven places to fifth, after leaders Mamelodi Sundowns were the only club to win among those who started the weekend in the top eight positions.

Lesotho international Sera Motebang headed Royal up front on 12 minutes and Mxolisi Macuphu secured victory for the home team with a touch-in five minutes from time.

The victory lifted Royal to 20 points, 17 behind Sundowns, who won 2-0 at Richards Bay on Friday in search of a sixth successive league title.

Royal stunned the pundits last season when he made his debut in the top flight, finishing third and qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup, Africa’s equivalent of the UEFA Europa League.

But they’ve been less impressive in their second campaign, with the win over AmaZulu as the league reached halfway just second in their most recent eight outings.

In Sunday’s other game, mid-table TS Galaxy managed just one attempt on goal as lowly Stellenbosch drew 0-0 at home in the eastern city of Mbombela.

Led by Germany’s Sead Ramovic, the 10th-placed Galaxy have a dismal record at home, winning just once in seven games and scoring just three times.
