Highlights of the Netball Quad Series battle between England and Australia
A late comeback from Australia saw them secure a 61-55 win over England in their opening game of the Quad Series.
England got off to a great start in the first quarter against the tournament favorites as they secured an 18-14 lead, Eleanor Cardwell showed her prowess scoring 16 of 18 attempted goals with the Roses Funmi Fadoju defense causing problems for the shooters from Australia.
It was only the second time England had taken a first quarter away from the Diamonds, but manager Jess Thirlby was disappointed that her team had not “managed” their lead better, asking her team to “raise their heads”.
The second quarter saw Australia fight back through Sophie Garbin’s creativity under the net, but a late Cardwell goal gave England a narrow 32–31 lead at halfway.
However, the third quarter saw Australia come back once more and finally take control at 48-41, the Diamonds taking the quarter 17-9 as they began to dominate England.
England fought as hard as they could for it to be a close contest in the end, Thirlby opting for a series of late changes with the return of Fadoju, but it wasn’t enough as they went down 61-55.

New Zealand got off to a great start in the Quad Series by recording a dominant 61-41 victory over home team South Africa.
Kelly Jury of the Silver Ferns was the star of the show on defense as she made life difficult for South African sharpshooters Lenize Potgieter and Nicholle Taljaard.
Sulu Fitzpatrick, Peta Toeava and Maia Wilson then set New Zealand apart in attack as they came off the bench to work brilliantly with Grace Nweke, helping their team to a 20-5 third quarter.
It was this that made the difference and gave New Zealand clear breathing space, South Africa’s fourth quarter comeback unable to bring them back into the game.
New Zealand now faces world number 1 team Australia on Sunday, with South Africa taking on England.
