Hospital services and school activities have been suspended in Mpumalanga’s Nkomazi township, following reports of flooding.
The area has a road that connects to the rest of the towns, and this has been severely damaged by floods, which is why these activities were suspended.
According to the Gift of the Givers Foundation, they have since activated their teams to urgently help with the situation in Mpumalanga.
On Thursday, the municipality reported two drowning incidents.
“A 60-year-old man from kaMdladla who was fishing in the Mlumati river was reportedly swept away by a strong current and has not been found,” the municipality said.
In another incident, an 18-year-old student from the Shongwe boarding school was swept away while trying to cross the same river and was also not found.

The municipal authorities are carrying out a physical assessment on the extent of the damage caused by the floods and monitoring the distribution of immediate social aid.
Meanwhile, two people have lost their lives after persistent rains in the Chris Hani municipal district in the Eastern Cape.
According to municipal spokeswoman Bulelwa Ganyaza, disaster management teams, emergency services and the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that at least two bodies had been recovered following floods that wreaked havoc in the area this week.
“Heavy downpours left a trail of destruction in four local municipalities and two people were reported missing in Cofimvaba yesterday (Friday),” it added.
Police have recovered one body and are continuing to search for another person who is also believed to have been swept away by the Qumanco stream in Cofimvaba.
Ganyaza added that the disaster management team also recovered the body of a woman in Owen street, Cofimvaba. The identity of the deceased is still unknown.
