A bus accident near Massachusetts’ Brandeis University on Saturday night left a student dead and 27 others injured, including the students and the bus driver.
The bus was heading to Brandeis University after a hockey game at Northeastern University in Boston when it crashed into a tree, according to a joint statement issued by the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office with the Waltham Police Chief. . Brandeis University stated that most of the injured were college students.
“Preliminary investigation suggests the bus crashed into a tree on South Street at approximately 10:32 p.m. A student was pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement read. “The remaining 26 students and the bus driver suffered injuries of varying degrees and all were transported to area hospitals.”
Video at the scene shows the bus severely vandalized, with the front and left side of the bus badly damaged. The bus had multiple windows broken and was sitting right next to a tree with branches scattered everywhere.

The Weston Fire Department declared it a “mass casualty incident,” according to NBC Boston.
“It’s really scary for me because I’m a person who uses the Boston to Cambridge shuttle frequently,” Draken Garfinkel, a Brandeis University senior, told WBZ. “A lot of times I use it to go see my brother in Boston or he comes here to see me, and just to think if one of us was on that bus, it’s incredibly disturbing.”

The conditions of both the students and the bus driver have not been disclosed. Brandeis University said in a statement that the identity of the slain individual has not yet been released.
