An Ohio store owner who was the victim of a home invasion attempt is praising the perpetrator’s mother after she made her son apologize for the crime and pay damages.
“Oh, so much respect for this mom. You could tell he loves his son, she’s worried about him,” Jim Grenig, owner of the Aaron Sign Shop in Garfield Heights, a Cleveland suburb, told Fox 8.
Security footage from the early morning of December 3 showed a suspect trying to kick in the door of the store, but ultimately missing.
“He took down the advertising I had in the window by kicking in the door, so I really wanted to put this guy first hand and let everyone see what he had done, hoping to embarrass him and maybe come forward and admit what he did.” . Grenig said earlier this month before the suspect came forward. The incident left around $600 in damage.

Grenig said that in addition to calling the police, he created a large “Wanted” banner with screenshots from the surveillance video, which he posted in front of the store. She also posted a video of the incident on social media in hopes of finding the perpetrator.
Last week, the perpetrator came forward, after his mother called Grenig and told him her son wanted to apologize and make amends, Fox 8 reported.
“He said, ‘Mom, I did something wrong. I’m on the news. I’m scared to even go to work,'” Grenig recounted what she was told.

The unidentified mother and son visited Grenig last week to apologize, explaining that he had a rough Friday night before making the decision to vandalize the Aaron Sign Shop.
“The young man was here in Garfield Heights in a bar Friday night where he was mugged and hit with a gun, he had some alcohol, he was bewildered, he was hurt, he wasn’t thinking straight, he came and kicked in the door,” said. Grenig.

“I was angry. I wanted ill will, I wanted harm, I wanted retribution, I wanted this and that. You know, for all the people I’ve met in my life before who gave me breaks, I gave this kid a break,” he added.

In addition to an apology for the attempted search, the mother and son signed a contract in which the son will pay for damages in monthly installments. Grenig agreed to remove the “Wanted” sign she had put up after the deal.

“This mom took the bull by the horns and made it happen. She brought her son to me,” Grenig said.
Even the mayor of the city praised the mother for her upbringing.

“For this mom to do what she did, it’s incredible. That’s an amazing way to be a mom and it should be an example of what other parents could do as well,” Garfield Heights Mayor Matt Burke told Fox 8.
