Orange County’s residents in the canyons are facing evacuation orders once again amidst heavy rains after the Airport Fire burned through much of the same area last year – prompting mudslide concerns.
As of noon on Thursday, mandatory evacuation orders were sent out for the Trabuco, Bell and Hot Springs Canyons, while the Long and Modjeska Canyon areas are still under voluntary evacuation orders.

Rains are expected to continue into Friday morning through much of the region as the state’s being hit with an atmospheric river. The National Weather Service expects heavier rainfall overnight.
Meanwhile, the whole canyon area remains under a flood watch warning from the National Weather Service until at least 4 a.m. on Valentine’s Day.
County staff have also started shutting down roads throughout the canyons, including the following roads:
- Trabuco Road and Rose Canyon
- Plano Trabuco and Robinson
- Grey Rock and Bell Canyon
- Hot Springs Canyon and Ortega Highway
Residents who are still in the area are being asked to find alternate routes.
The county’s public works department is also warning residents to stay away from creeks, riverbeds and flood control channels on their social media pages.
The evacuations come after the Airport Fire burned over 23,000 acres when a county public works crew accidentally started a fire in the canyons.

It’s not the first time these neighborhoods have had to evacuate over the last few years, facing similar mudslides after the Canyon 2 Fire, the Bond Fire and the Silverado Fires.
