New York City police officers cleared a camp of immigrants refusing to be evicted from their free temporary stay at a luxury Manhattan hotel on Wednesday night.
The migrants, described by the city council as mostly “single men”, slept on the street outside the Watson Hotel for three days after their eviction earlier this week. Footage from the raid Wednesday night shows NYPD officers and vehicles clustering around the migrants as city workers clean up the area.
“We are grateful that nearly all of the single men staying at the Watson Hotel have chosen to take our calls and come in tonight from the freezing temperatures,” a spokesman for Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement Wednesday. “Single men staying on the Watson now chose to relocate to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, a humanitarian aid center that several elected officials today called a ‘warm’ place, or decided to leave our care by connecting with friends, family or other networks”.

“To be clear, no arrests were made tonight, and the only items discarded were those on the street. Any items the asylum seekers had in their rooms are still in our care and will remain available for you to pick up,” the statement continued.

Mayor Adams tried to quash reports that the Brooklyn facility was inhumane with a visit to the shelter on Monday.
