An Ohio high school student was reportedly forced to strip down to her underwear during a search for a vape pen that school officials believed she had last year, according to a lawsuit.

The principal allegedly told an East Lake Middle School health aide to have the girl remove everything, including her bra, in the nurse’s office to look for a vaporizer she allegedly had, WOIO-TV reported.

The girl allowed a friend to put a vape in her locker last September, according to the lawsuit against the Willoughby Eastlake Schools Board of Education, and the principal made the decision to conduct a full-body search after it was not found.

“The district director wanted to find the vaporizer so [they] she went and searched her two lockers, her belongings and couldn’t find anything,” explained the family’s attorney, Jared Klebanow. “Instead of leaving or talking to other staff or students about it, this principal decided she wanted them to search the student body.”

The assistant carried out the registration after confirming with the nurse who was outside the office that she should do it.

Supposedly, the girl was also left naked in the room before the attendant returned to look into the girl’s eyes with an ultraviolet light.

“People will say time heals wounds, but there’s always that scar and that’s something you’re going to have to deal with for a long time,” Klebanow said.

The lawsuit alleges emotional distress, that the girl’s rights were violated, and that the school failed to train employees on how to properly handle the situation.

“In the most extreme circumstances where there could be a serious threat of violence,” Klebanow said. “In the event and in the day and age that we are, if you know if there was a credible threat of a weapon at a school and they had reasonable evidence or actual evidence to show that that weapon may be used, you know that further searches can be done. exhaustive”. permissible, but in a case like this, when you’re looking for something that again poses no threat of violence, no threat of harm to any student or staff, it’s not appropriate and it’s a violation of students’ rights.”

He added that it’s important for school officials to understand that students “do not check their rights when they walk through the doors of a school. Just because we go to school as students doesn’t mean we don’t have our constitutional rights and it’s very important that we These people are trained and understand those rights and know what they can do under the law and what is not allowed.”
