The North Carolina State Board of Elections on Tuesday certified the results of the November general election after an extensive canvassing process designed to ensure that the votes were correctly tabulated.

The five-member panel tasked with overseeing election operations across the state authenticated the count of each ballot item in national, state and local races, making the results official. Among them were the election of Republican US Representative Ted Budd to the US Senate and the state’s 14 US House of Representatives races, which resulted in a partisan split of 7-7.

Just over 3.79 million people, or just over 51% of the state’s 7.41 million registered voters, cast ballots, according to data from the state board. Participation in the last midterm elections, in 2018, was 53%.

In the weeks following the Nov. 8 vote, each of the county’s 100 boards of elections reviewed their results to confirm that all eligible ballots, including provisional ballots and absentee ballots, were counted. The bipartisan teams at each board also conducted manual recounts of ballots from randomly selected groups.

Three subsequent state audits evaluated the voter history data, the accuracy of the tabulator, and the provisional eligibility of voters. The state board compared the number of authorized voters and absentee ballot requests to the number of ballots cast to identify any instances of fraud, such as ballot stuffing.

The comparison, along with equipment checks at more than 180 polling places, confirmed the accuracy of the count, said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the state board.

“These audit results, and the results of similar audits conducted after each election, show that our certified voting machines count ballots accurately and are reliable,” he said in a recent statement.

More than 187,600 voters cast absentee ballots by mail this year, nearly double the number in 2018.

Republican board member Tommy Tucker cited that figure Tuesday as he revived his argument that the board should reconsider its ban on county election officials examining signatures on absentee ballot papers, to account for the strong increased use of absentee ballots.

The Democratic majority on the board, which defeated a Republican motion in July to allow signature matching between absentee ballot documents and voter registration records, stood by its position that the proposal would create unequal access to the vote across the board. the state.
