California State University, Fullerton, students Emily Wilson, Noriko Ostroy and Rubén Montoya joined the newsroom as interns last month.
Ostroy, who is double-majoring in American studies and communications with a focus in journalism, will focus on the city of Westminster during her internship.
“I am truly humbled by this opportunity to work with Voice of OC,” said Ostroy. “I think to be interning for a nonprofit newsroom is a great privilege. While I try to find value across the entire media landscape, local watchdog journalism, to me, is uniquely essential in ensuring we have a well-informed and engaged society.”
“I view journalism as a form of public service, our role being rooted in a responsibility to provide the public accurate and accessible information, less dependent on outside pressure from like advertising or shareholders,” she said.
Ostroy has worked with Tusk Magazine as a copy editor, and the Daily Titan as the chief copy editor, growing from her role as a staff reporter covering Fullerton city council.
Wilson – who currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Titan – will cover education, as well as the cities of Fullerton, Yorba Linda and Placentia.
“Nonprofit newsrooms are the future of journalism,” said Wilson. “These types of newsrooms can make news accessible in a way that others can’t, and I’m very excited to be in an environment where the biggest focus is to report fairly on how municipal developments affect citizens.”
She first started at her high school’s student newspaper, The Phoenix, and wrote for the Daily Californian at UC Berkeley during the summer prior to joining the Daily Titan during her studies at Cal State Fullerton.
“As a journalist, I’m most fulfilled by stories that I feel like impact and inform the public, so I couldn’t be more excited to intern for a newsroom that prioritizes those types of stories. Having that experience while still in college will make me a better, more well-rounded journalist.”
Rubén Montoya, who currently serves as the managing editor for the Daily Titan, started in journalism during his studies at community college.
Montoya previously served as the opinion editor at SAC Media, a student publication of Mt. San Antonio College, where he earned his Associates of Arts in Journalism.
“I took my COMM 101 class in community college, and my professor was amazing. She really egged me on. She saw the potential in my writing, and I’ve always been a strong writer,” he said of his professor, Jessica Cardenas-Fuller, who oversees the journalism program at Mt. SAC and serves as the advisor to SAC Media. “I was at a point in my life where I sort of needed an opportunity, and I just took it, and from there, I kind of just fell in love with journalism.”
Montoya will be covering North Orange County, including Brea, La Habra, Placentia and Yorba Linda.
“Nowadays we see that there’s a real lack of coverage in a lot of places in this country, and nonprofits have really done a great job of sort of filling that void,” he said.
“And I see Voice of OC has done that tremendously.”
