(CNN) And you think you helped devour a really big pizza recently? You have nothing on this one.
When Pizza Hut decided to bring back its “Great New York” pizza, a cheese and pepperoni cake with fold-over slices designed for eating on the go in true Manhattan style, the company wanted to find a way to celebrate the news.
So they went to the Los Angeles Convention Center, whose space would be big enough to hold a 13,990-square-foot pizza, with the goal of breaking the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest pizza.
They got to work on the giant pizza on Wednesday. And on Friday, Pizza Hut sent out the official word: An on-site Guinness representative confirmed that it was, in fact, the world’s largest pizza.
CNN Travel reached out to Guinness by email Friday afternoon for comment but had not received a response as of 5 p.m. ET Friday.
How the pizza came together
To complete the daunting task, workers first layered dough, painted tomato sauce, and then added toppings. Once everything was ready, it was baked in pieces, according to the Pizza Hut press release.
In all, 13,653 pounds (6,193 kilograms) of dough, 4,948 pounds of pizza sauce, more than 8,800 pounds of cheese and approximately 630,496 pieces of pepperoni were used to make the record-breaking pie.
Pizza Hut CEO David Graves told Reuters the pizza would not go to waste: as soon as the pizza is ready and documented for Guinness, its 68,000 slices will be donated to local food banks.
