Wind chill temperatures on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington reached an impressive -108 degrees Fahrenheit Friday night.
“Still -46 F with winds at 97 mph and a wind chill of -108 F at 10 pm,” the National Weather Service’s Eastern Region office tweeted.
He noted that records going back to January 22, 1885 include a reading of -50 degrees.
“This is also the NH state record for the coldest temperature,” he said.

Mount Washington is the highest peak in the northeastern US, with an elevation of 6,288 feet.
Earlier in the day, the Mount Washington Observatory tweeted that the daily record low of -32 degrees Fahrenheit, set in 1963, had been broken.

The observatory’s website showed the temperature on Saturday morning to be -31 degrees, with a wind chill of -83 degrees. He said the winds would remain up Saturday morning. Temperatures were expected to moderate on Saturday afternoon, reaching -15 by sunset and rising overnight. Wind speed would drop to 50 to 70 miles per hour on Sunday morning.

Fox Weather reported that due to the bitterly cold conditions there, a wind chill warning will remain in effect until 1 a.m. EST Sunday.
