Maryland police announced they have arrested an illegal immigrant teen and suspected MS-13 gang member for the murder of a 20-year-old autistic woman over the summer.

“It’s been for me, many sleepless nights… I never thought I would take this journey of losing my daughter in such a horrible way and so soon,” Tammy Nobles, Kayla Hamilton’s mother, told WMAR-TV in Baltimore. . “When I found out she was a minor, she shocked me. I thought, ‘Did a minor do this to her?’ Like he was really shocked. I couldn’t believe a teenager could do this.”

Police in Aberdeen, located in northeast Maryland about 30 miles from Baltimore, announced they have arrested an unnamed 17-year-old boy for allegedly strangling 20-year-old Hamilton in July.

“The coroner’s office determined that Hamilton’s death was a homicide by strangulation. Detectives learned from Hamilton’s family that she was autistic and had recently moved to Aberdeen with her boyfriend of twenty-two years,” police said. aberdeen. Department wrote in a news release on Thursday.

Police said US Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed the 17-year-old El Salvador native was listed as a member of Malva Salvatrucha, known as MS-13. Authorities were able to apprehend the suspect after matching his DNA with evidence from the crime scene.

He was arrested last Sunday in Edgewood, which is about 10 miles south of Aberdeen. He is being held without bond at the Harford County Detention Center.

In addition to a first-degree murder charge, the suspect faces rape and robbery charges, according to CBS News.

“I’m her mother, I’m supposed to be there to protect her, but you can’t protect your children when they’re adults,” Nobles added, according to CBS. “But, I feel responsible. I was supposed to keep her safe.”

Aberdeen Lt. C. William Reiber said local police worked continuously to locate the suspect and close down the family.

“It was about making that arrest for Kayla, so she just wasn’t a number. That this meant something,” Reiber said, CBS reported. “It meant something to be a part of this, I can tell you it meant a lot to me and to our team here in Aberdeen.”

The Justice Department described MS-13 as “one of the largest street gangs in the United States” in April, operating in areas including Frederick County, Anne Arundel County, Prince George’s County and the Montgomery County in Maryland.
