Five dismembered bodies were found in bags north of the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, Mexican prosecutors confirmed Monday.
The Guerrero State Attorney General’s Office reported that an investigation for multiple homicide was opened against those responsible for the homicide in the town of San Martín El Jover.

Prosecutors did not provide details about the killings, but local media reported that the bodies had been dismembered and left in plastic bags.
Acapulco has been divided by the bloody violence of drug gangs for more than 15 years.
And in another town north of the compound, prosecutors said Monday that two other men had been killed. The town of Xaltianguis has been contested by rival vigilante gangs, some of whom are believed to have links to drug cartels.

In 2019, a heavily armed vigilante force seized Xaltianguis by driving out a rival gang, blowing up a car with gas cylinders inside, and cutting up the body of one of two fallen enemies.
The gruesome discovery comes amid escalating violence in Mexico. Last week, more than 3,500 soldiers were used in an operation to capture Ovidio Guzmán, son of jailed drug cartel kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
