MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis businesses boarded up their windows ahead of the release of body camera footage of a police encounter with Tire Nichols, who ultimately died after the confrontation.
On January 7, a 29-year-old black man, Nichols, was stopped by Memphis police officers for a traffic stop and died three days later from serious injuries sustained during the encounter. The five police officers involved were charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and five other felony counts.

Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis reviewed the body camera footage and said the actions that led to Nichol’s death were “a basic lack of humanity” during a speech Wednesday, but urged people to avoid respond with violence. The Memphis Police Department planned to release the body camera footage on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Nichols’ family, while devastated and calling for justice, urged protesters to protest peacefully during a press conference on Friday.

“We want peace,” said Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells. “That’s what the family wants. That’s what the community wants.”
The body cam footage is expected to be released on Friday after 7 p.m. EST.
