D. Eric Kpayea, the national secretary general of the Liberia People’s Democratic Party, has resigned his post seven months after the defeat of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), a coalition his party has been into since 2017.
LPDP is still in coalition with George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change. However, Kpayea is the first high profile individual to resign his post and member of the party after 2023 election.
In a communication to the party’s national chairman D. Wah Hne Jr, Kpayea said after a decade of devoted service across various capacities, he was tendering his resignation as both National Secretary General and member of the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) effective immediately.
This decision, he says, comes after intense internal disagreements regarding the Party’s policy direction, adding that it was made after careful consideration.
“However, I believe this voluntary resignation is essential to enable me to pursue a more independent approach to national political discourse, which is imperative at this juncture,” Kpayea said.
According to him, his commitment to advocating for good governance, democracy and civil liberties remains unwavering.
Kpayea added: “Mr. Chairman, I sincerely extend my heartfelt gratitude to the grassroots supporters of the Liberia People Democratic Party, whose unswerving dedication, sacrifices, support and respect have been invaluable throughout our democratic journey.”
Kpayea is not the only high profile official to resign since the founding of the party. On June 2, 2023, Bomi County Senator Alex Tyler, then-Political Leader of the party, resigned after he became uneasy within the ranks of the LPDP over the second term bid of the Coalition for Democratic Change.
At the time, he stated that he was not aware of his party being a part of any coalition since the last one he consummated with the Congress for Democratic Change and the National Patriotic Party (NPP) expired in November 2022.
“I’m yet to renew or sign the agreement or coalition document for the impending elections. The one we had expired November 2022. Up to now, we had not yet reached an agreement to sign or reach the resolution of our party,” Senator Tyler said in 2023.
