President Boakai was on his way to an official function when the convoy, which was moving from the RIA end towards Monrovia, was intruded on by a “Kekeh” rider carrying passengers.
The motorcade, transporting President Joseph Boakai, was en route to an orphanage dedication ceremony.
The event was scheduled at the invitation of his wife, the First Lady of the Republic of Liberia. As the convoy moved towards its destination, a catastrophic collision unfolded, leading to immediate chaos and concern.
The actual intent of the rider to intrude on the convoy has not yet been established as the investigation is still ongoing.
Eyewitnesses on the scene said the Kehkeh Rider had intended to cross to the other side of the road, not considering that the convoy was still behind when he intended it.
Few Bystanders along RIA were also injured as a result of the accident.
President Boakai, who was in another vehicle in the convoy, immediately expressed regret over the tragedy.
At the same time Information Minister, Jerolinmek M. Piah noted that the Executive Mansion will issue an official statement on the situation and said that those involved have been taken to the hospital. “We are on our way to the hospital with the president and the EMansion will do the needful,” Piah said.
