Monrovia – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has launched an investigation into reports of a pox-like disease among inmates at a prison facility in Greenville, Sinoe County. The development comes amid heightened concerns over the ongoing Mpox outbreak in Africa and across the globe, which NPHIL is actively addressing in Liberia.

According to a press release issued by NPHIL, County and District Surveillance Officers have been mobilized to conduct a comprehensive epidemiological investigation. Their efforts include assessing suspected cases among the inmates and evaluating the symptoms of the reported disease.
“As part of the response, appropriate specimens will be collected and sent to the National Reference Laboratory for testing to identify the pathogen and its biomolecular characteristics,” the release stated.
While urging the public to remain calm, NPHIL reassured citizens that updates on the situation will be provided as more information becomes available. “We admonish the public to avoid panic and contact NPHIL for accurate information. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to avoid physical contact and observe all sanitary measures,” the statement added.
The Director-General of NPHIL, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, signed the release, emphasizing the institute’s commitment to public health safety.
This investigation underscores the urgency of Liberia’s preparedness and response capabilities, as the country continues to address public health threats, including the regional Mpox outbreak.
