The Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia Fire Service have announced progress in their investigation into the recent fire at the Capitol Building, confirming that the incident was an act of arson.

Speaking at a press briefing held Wednesday, January 8 at the LNP headquarters, Inspector General Gregory Coleman disclosed that compelling evidence links the blaze to deliberate criminal actions.
According to the Inspector General, an extensive examination of the Capitol’s electrical system revealed no faults that could have triggered the fire.
“Up to the time of the incident, the grid was still supplying electricity, which shows that it was not the cause,” Coleman stated.
He said instead, investigators found evidence suggesting the fire started in multiple locations, a hallmark of intentional arson.
Further upholding their case, Inspector Coleman noted that investigators discovered a container at the scene containing a flammable substance.
This finding, combined with other physical evidence, has led the LNP and LNFS to classify the incident as a deliberate act aimed at sabotaging a critical government institution.
At the same time, the LNP Inspector General maintained that the authority had identified several individuals of interest connected to the incident.
While their identities remain undisclosed for now, Coleman confirmed that these individuals have been invited for questioning.
“If they refuse to cooperate, they will be ordered arrested,” Coleman warned.
He further noted that on the day of the fire, several arrests were made.
However, he added that some individuals were released on personal recognizance, while others were signed for by their legal representatives.
Coleman assured the public that those conclusively linked to the act would face justice within the next 24 hours going forward.
For his part, the Liberia Fire Service Director General Col. G. Warsuweh Barvoul corroborated the findings, noting that flammable substances were used to ignite the fire.
“We are almost at the point of conclusion, and from observation, there was a fluid substance used to cause the fire at the Capitol,” Col Barvoul stated.
Meanwhile, Inspector General Coleman has called on the public to support the investigation and refrain from politicizing the incident.
“We want to reassure the public that this investigation is factual and based on sufficient evidence. The police are committed to ensuring the rule of law prevails,” Coleman emphasized.
Coleman notes that while investigators continue to work with foreign experts to verify evidence, the scene of the fire remains under strict security to preserve its integrity.
