The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is reported to be investigating the widely criticized donkey carts bought for R780,000 by the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management.

SIU probes R780,000 purchase of donkey carts

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is reported to be investigating the widely criticized donkey carts bought for R780,000 by the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management.

While the exorbitant purchase fee for the donkey carts left many speechless, criticism quickly fell when some of the carts began to break down.

SABC News reports that the controversial donation of the 20 cars to residents of Dibono and Manawana villages in Mahikeng has prompted a special investigation by the SIU.

Disaster: Dozens of houses in Mpumalanga damaged by a strong storm

At least 50 homes in and around Hazyview, Mpumalanga were damaged by a storm on Friday evening, November 18, according to reports. Provincial disaster management teams have been helping affected households since last night.

new SABCs reports that disaster management teams from Mpumalanga Province, Mbombela City Metro and Ehlazeni District Municipality were dispatched to the storm-affected areas to assess the damage.

SASSA R350 grant: almost R2 billion underutilized

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu recently revealed that the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been having trouble disbursing the entire budget allocated for the vital Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, or R350.

According to SABC NewsZulu confirmed that less than R1.7bn was spent because a significant number of applicants failed to verify their bank accounts.

The SASSA R350 grant was introduced in May 2020 to help poor South Africans deal with the economic crisis at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suspect Arrested for Bomb Threat Targeting Eskom’s Oberholzer

Eskom Group COO Jan Oberholzer received a bomb threat from an unknown cell phone number in May 2022. A suspect was arrested in connection with the threat on Friday morning, November 18.

Following the threat, Eskom’s internal security investigations team referred the matter to the police. The preliminary investigation found that the suspect used an unregistered SIM card to send the threat.

The Hawks and private investigators from Bidvest Protea Coin tracked down and arrested a 27-year-old man in Vosman, Mpumalanga. There was reportedly overwhelming evidence linking him to the crime.

In what the South African Police Service (SAPS) refers to as a breakthrough, a South African currently serving a 15-year sentence in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) will be extradited to Ireland in connection with a 2014 double murder.
