Tonight, Irvine voters will elect three new city council members and a new mayor in the city’s first by-district election.
Here is where the initial tallies were at shortly after 10 p.m., according to the OC Registrar of Voters.
In the mayor’s race, Larry Agran was in the lead over Tammy Kim by 4,106 votes — 41.26% over 34.52% of the overall votes tallied so far. There are seven candidates running for mayor, including two current city council members and five newcomers.
In District 1, Melinda Liu was leading over John Park by 430 votes — 34.29% over 30.08% of the overall votes tallied so far. Five newcomers are running for the second district seat, including three current city commissioners.
In District 2, William Go was leading over Jeff Starke by 454 votes — 32.94% over 27.63% of the overall votes tallied so far. Five newcomers are running for the second district seat, including three current city commissioners.
In District 3, James Mai was leading over Tom Chomyn by 1,345 votes — 42.49% over 30.67% of the overall votes tallied so far. Three candidates, all city commissioners, are running in District 3.
And in District 4, Mike Carroll was leading over Ayn Craciun by 1,526 votes — 57% over 43% of the overall votes tallied so far. There are only two candidates running for this seat.

It’s the city’s first time using district elections. That means residents are only voting for a candidate that represents the district where they live.
However, all residents are able to vote for the mayor.
This year, the council is also growing from five to seven members.
Since there are no incumbents in three different districts, residents are guaranteed to see fresh faces on the council.
The city is also guaranteed to get a new mayor since the current Mayor Farrah Khan — who was elected in 2020 — is termed out this year.
