St Albans Prison in Gqeberha.
An intruder who was shot by a patrol officer at the Eastern Cape’s St Albans prison succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
Prison services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said the incident happened on Friday morning. The patrol officer, who shot the man, saw the intruder attempting to break into the prison through the fence.
“A Department of Correctional Services officer on routine patrol duties reacted when he detected movement along the perimeter fence. A substantial amount of contraband was also discovered. SAPS had to take over the scene and more will be shared details at a later stage,” Nxumalo said.
The prison has had no shortage of drama recently, with two inmates stabbing three guards inside the correctional facility last month.

A week earlier, a guard serving breakfast there was stabbed in the eye.
In September, prison services seized a cell phone from an inmate who had been sharing “wacky” photos of himself online.
