DURBAN, (CAJ News) – OVER 3,000 suspects have been arrested and 130 illegal firearms seized this holiday season as KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) authorities crack down on criminals this holiday season.

Ethekwini Township is the focal point of operations aimed at improving security at a time when the KZN receives its highest number of visitors during the year.

“Smart operation led by the SAPS (South African Police Service) has helped keep KwaZulu-Natal province safer during this period,” said Sipho Hlomuka, a member of the KZN Community Safety and Transport Executive Committee.

He and Ethekwini Township Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda went on a beachfront walk to ensure the safety of visitors.

They also welcomed new recruits who bolstered the resort town’s crime-fighting initiatives.

Durban received 20 newly trained police officers to deal with crime.

“The new officers at the university would help enforce the law and at the same time combat the shortage of police officers at different police stations,” Hlomuka said.

He said they were beefing up road safety and law enforcement plans in the province as the New Year begins.

A domestic tourist, Nomafu Ciya, from the Eastern Cape said she felt safe in Durban.

“There is a large law enforcement presence. They are keeping a close watch on the beach,” Ciya said.
