Four people have been arrested after they allegedly kidnapped an Indian businessman upon arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, police said.
National Police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the victim was kidnapped last Friday.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the Indian businessman was lured to South Africa by the union [members] that [were] posing as businessmen. After kidnapping him, the men demanded a ransom from his family in India,” Mathe added.

Mathe said a team made up of various police units was set up and on Tuesday they tracked the kidnappers to the Fordsburg area of Johannesburg.
He added that four cell phones were seized, including the one used to communicate with the family. Police also recovered the victim’s watch, driver’s license, a firearm, and several SIM cards.
“A substantial amount of money, believed to be ransom payments, was also seized,” it said.
The four suspects appeared at Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of kidnapping and extortion.
“The victim is safe and is receiving counseling,” Mathe said.
